The Light Verb Jungle

نویسنده

چکیده

The study of light verbs and complex predicates is frought with dangers and misunderstandings that go beyond the merely terminological. This paper attempts to pic through the terminological, theoretical and empirical jungle in order to arrive at a novel understanding of the role of light verbs crosslinguistically. In particular, this paper addresses how light verbs and complex predicates can be identified crosslinguistically, what the relationship between the two is, and whether light verbs must always be associated with uniform syntactic and semantic properties. Finally, the paper proposes a novel view of how light verbs are situated in the lexicon by addressing some historical data and their relationship with preverbs and verb particles. Jespersen (1965,Volume VI:117) is generally credited with first coining the term light verb, which he applied to English V+NP constructions as in (1).

The difference between "giving a rose" and "giving a kiss": Sustained neural activity to the light verb construction.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms associated with processing light verb constructions such as "give a kiss". These constructions consist of a semantically underspecified light verb ("give") and an event nominal that contributes most of the meaning and also activates an argument structure of its own ("kiss"). This creates a mismatch between the ...

In this paper, we have addressed the task of PropBank annotation of light verb constructions, which like multi-word expressions pose special problems. To arrive at a solution, we have evaluated 3 different possible methods of annotation. The final method involves three passes: (1) manual identification of a light verb construction, (2) annotation based on the light verb construction‟s Frame Fil...
